Atlas House – City of London
Phase One Works was appointed to deliver a dual contract of enabling works across two landmark buildings in the City of London for a leading international hotel group. The award of this contract followed a detailed pre-contract period with more than 60 operatives mobilised across both sites.
Atlas House, one of the properties under this contract, is a listed building that requires particularly thoughtful planning and execution. The project was programmed across a 10-week duration and focused on delivering a complete strip out in London, taking Atlas House back to its shell and core. Given the heritage status of the building, all works were carried out under strict procedures to preserve its historic features and maintain the structural integrity of the site.
The enabling works included the installation of site temporary services, fire alarms, and intruder alarms to maintain safety and security throughout the programme. POW also undertook a full R&D asbestos survey and safe removal, followed by an extensive MEP plant drain-down and removal. Internal protections and hoardings were installed to shield heritage elements during the works, ensuring the listed building was safeguarded while intrusive activities took place.
A notable feature of this project was POW’s approach to sustainability. During the pre-contract stage, the team carefully removed and palletised approximately 5,000 raised access floor tiles. Over 200 pallets were subsequently transported and rehomed, preventing valuable materials from being sent to landfill.
